MAJOR DEAL: Yankees Deal Stroman & Prospect For All-Star Reliever

The New York Yankees are reportedly exploring the possibility of trading Marcus Stroman, with one proposed deal involving the acquisition of an All-Star reliever in a three-player trade.

Patrick McAvoy of Sporting News suggested a scenario where the Yankees send Stroman to the San Diego Padres in exchange for bullpen reinforcement.

Proposed trade:

  • Yankees receive: Robert Suarez
  • Padres receive: Marcus Stroman, Brando Mayea (No. 14 prospect), $5 million cash

This deal would strengthen New York’s bullpen while providing San Diego with a starting pitcher and a promising young prospect.

Suarez, an All-Star in 2024, has been with the Padres since 2022 after starting his professional career in Japan’s NPB. In 2024, the right-hander posted a 9-3 record with a 2.77 ERA in 65 games, along with 36 saves. Suarez also excelled in the playoffs, delivering 3.1 scoreless innings and earning two saves. Under a five-year, $46 million deal that includes a 2025 opt-out, Suarez could serve as a setup man for the Yankees and provide closing experience.

The Yankees would part ways with Stroman, whose salary would be partially offset by the $5 million included in the deal. Stroman, in the final year of a two-year, $37 million contract, had a 10-9 record with a 4.32 ERA across 29 starts but was left off the playoff roster.

Additionally, the Padres would acquire Brando Mayea, a 19-year-old Cuban outfield prospect who hit .281 with 9 RBIs in 35 rookie-ball games in 2024.

Analyst Believes Yankees Need Another Reliever

The New York Yankees are actively looking to trade Marcus Stroman, and Patrick McAvoy believes a proposed deal with the San Diego Padres could be mutually beneficial.

In this scenario, San Diego would trade Robert Suarez, who has been linked to trade rumors, while acquiring a starting pitcher in Stroman and a young prospect. For New York, this move would not only clear Stroman’s contract but also reinforce their bullpen.

“The Yankees also could use a little bit more for the bullpen even after [acquiring] Williams. Former Yankees reliever Tommy Kahnle reportedly signed with the Detroit Tigers,” McAvoy noted. “It wouldn’t hurt for the Yankees to add another reliever, and that’s where the San Diego Padres could come into play. San Diego has been involved in offseason trade rumors centered around All-Star reliever Robert Suarez. Suarez, who took over as the team’s closer in 2024, posted a 2.77 ERA and 36 saves. While he was outstanding for the Padres, his name has been circulating in trade talks…

“If he’s available, the Yankees should aggressively pursue him and explore whether Stroman could be part of the deal. New York should be all-in for the 2025 season, and adding someone like Suarez could only strengthen their chances,” McAvoy added.

The Yankees already traded for Devin Williams, but pairing him with Suarez would create a formidable one-two punch at the back end of the bullpen, further solidifying their pitching depth for the upcoming season.

Stroman Fuels Trade Speculation

Marcus Stroman’s name has been a topic of trade discussions all offseason, and the pitcher has only fueled the speculation further. On January 28, Stroman unfollowed the New York Yankees’ Instagram account, which added more fuel to the rumors surrounding his potential departure.

MLB insider Robert Murray confirmed that the Yankees have been actively attempting to trade Stroman, stating, “I also would imagine a Marcus Stroman trade would appear more likely than not” on The Baseball Insiders.

Stroman, a two-time All-Star, has been a key figure in the Yankees’ rotation but now looks to be on the move as trade talks continue to heat up.
