So far this offseason, Georgia football has made significant strides in the transfer portal, adding some strong players to the roster, including two starting wide receivers and notable talent in the secondary.
As February approaches, transfer portal discussions will slow down until after spring practice. However, there was one more player Georgia was pursuing: Ohio State defensive lineman Hero Kanu.
Kanu has spent the last two seasons at Ohio State, recording 14 tackles and one sack. While those numbers aren’t exceptional, Kanu is still considered a talented player, having been a four-star recruit in high school. Georgia, led by Kirby Smart, hosted Kanu for a visit in Athens on Tuesday, and it was expected that he would announce his commitment soon after.
And that’s exactly what has happened.
According to Hayes Fawcett of On3, Kanu made his decision official on Wednesday morning.
While losing a recruitment battle, especially to an SEC rival like Texas, is disappointing, it’s not a huge setback. For one, Kanu hasn’t fully proven himself at the college level yet. While he certainly has potential, it’s unlikely he would make a major impact in his first season at Texas.
Additionally, Georgia still has ample time to target more transfers if needed. Though the focus will shift away from the portal for now, once spring practice concludes, Georgia will likely re-engage with the transfer market if necessary.
While it would’ve been ideal to land Kanu, there’s no need to panic. Georgia can always add a defensive lineman later this year if they feel it’s needed. Plus, the Bulldogs have a strong track record of developing defensive linemen, so they likely already have talented players in place on the roster.
