The New York Yankees were said to be interested in trading for Nolan Arenado, the St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman.
However, such reports have subsided as spring training approaches in less than a month. However, MLB.com insider Bryan Hoch appeared on SNY on January 27 and stated that he expects the Yankees to come around and try to make a deal to acquire Arenado.
“Another infielder would be ideal,” Hoch told SNY. “And you know what, I keep expecting for them to come back around Nolan Arenado because the Cardinals are looking to move him before Opening Day.
I know it has stopped a little bit, but the Yankees now have DJ LeMahieu in the infield, so I know a huge part of that is moving Marcus Stroman, maybe that contract, that payroll, so maybe there will be some movement there.”
Arenado is in the sixth year of his eight-year, $260 million contract. The eight-time All-Star and ten-time Gold Glove winner would lock down the Yankees’ third base spot. It would also allow Jazz Chisholm Jr. to go to second base.
St. Louis is attempting to deal Arenado, and Hoch believes the Yankees will renew their interest in him and make a bid to acquire him. Arenado hit.272 for the Cardinals in 2024, with 16 home runs and 71 RBIs.
Cardinals Still Looking to Trade Arenado
St. Louis entered the offseason hoping to unload salary, and Arenado’s name quickly became embroiled in trade talks.
However, with spring training quickly approaching, the Cardinals have failed to deal him. However, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said the team is still looking for a trade that involves Arenado.
“Well, I’m hopeful,” Mozeliak explained. “When you say ‘confident’ or ‘putting odds on it,’ I believe it is still a coin flip. I understand that it is a high priority for both the organization and myself. So I’ll be completely focused on that until it isn’t. I believe that (trade) Nolan remains priority one, two, and three.”
St. Louis had agreed to trade Arenado to the Houston Astros, but the third baseman refused due to a no-trade clause.
Meanwhile, Mozeliak says he wants patience as he considers trading Arenado.
“It is the linchpin, but there is nothing that I can do to move it faster,” Mozeliak admitted. “We are in a holding pattern, and all I ask is for a little patience on this, because regardless of what I want to do or the team wants to do, that’s not how this works.”
Arenado also holds a five-year Silver Slugger Award.
