The Las Vegas Raiders have filled their defensive coordinator role under Pete Carroll. The new head coach is bringing in a familiar face, someone who will return to the franchise.
Top veteran coach is officially returning as the Raiders’ defensive coordinator under Pete Carroll, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero. NFL insider Josina Anderson reported that Graham had emerged as the frontrunner for the position. Pelissero added that Graham had another opportunity on the table before Carroll and co-owner Tom Brady stepped in.
“Graham’s contract had expired, giving him multiple options, including a potential move to Jacksonville,” Pelissero explained. “However, Pete Carroll and Tom Brady, both admirers of Graham, persuaded him to come back.”
Graham was also reportedly in the mix for several head coaching opportunities and nearly joined new Jaguars head coach Liam Coen in Jacksonville.
His return is a significant win for the Raiders, ensuring continuity within the team and maintaining a key figure in their organization.
Raiders defensive coordinator move benefits Pete Carroll
Carroll now has a trusted ally in Graham to help him get to know the players in the locker room. This move is especially beneficial for Maxx Crosby. The Raiders’ sole All-Pro defender has flourished under Graham’s leadership, totaling 34.5 sacks with Graham calling the shots on defense. Crosby has also earned three of his four Pro Bowl selections while working with Graham.
Crosby had long been speculated to want a way out of Vegas after enduring several coaching changes, including under Jon Gruden, Josh McDaniels, and Antonio Pierce. Despite developing a strong relationship with Pierce in 2023 after McDaniels was fired, Crosby was spotted shaking hands with the new Raiders head coach. Graham’s return significantly raises the chances of Crosby staying in Vegas and avoids further trade rumors.
In 2024, Graham’s defense ranked 15th in total yards allowed. The unit totaled 38 sacks and forced 13 takeaways, with some notable individual performances. Linebacker Robert Spillane set a career-high with 158 tackles under Graham’s coaching. Safety Tre’von Moehrig posted career-best marks with 104 tackles and 10 pass breakups, while Isaiah Pola-Mao recorded new highs of 89 tackles, five pass breakups, and forced two fumbles for the first time in his career.
Though Graham never had the chance to coach alongside Carroll in the NFL, they share a connection through the New England Patriots. Graham spent time with the Pats from 2009 to 2015, during which Brady played quarterback and led the team to six Super Bowl championships. Graham also won Super Bowl XLIX with Brady and against Carroll’s Seahawks. Now, the trio will work together to turn around the Raiders’ fortunes.
