The Chicago Cubs are in urgent need of a third baseman to upgrade their infield, and with Alex Bregman now unlikely to join them, the Cubs may need to turn to the trade market. The Pittsburgh Pirates, having recently signed Adam Frazier, find themselves with a surplus of infielders. While the Pirates may be hesitant to trade within their division, a three-team trade could facilitate a deal. The Philadelphia Phillies, looking to strengthen their starting rotation, could serve as the bridge in this trade.
Here’s how a potential three-team trade could unfold:
Chicago Cubs acquire:
- 3B Alec Bohm (Philadelphia Phillies)
- SP Bailey Falter (Philadelphia Phillies)
Philadelphia Phillies acquire:
- 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes (Pittsburgh Pirates)
- SP Jameson Taillon (Chicago Cubs)
Pittsburgh Pirates acquire:
- OF Brandon Marsh (Philadelphia Phillies)
- RP Keegan Thompson (Chicago Cubs)
For the Cubs, adding Bohm would be a significant upgrade at third base. Bohm hit .280 with 15 home runs and 97 RBIs in 2024. Falter would offer the Cubs rotation depth or serve as long relief. The Phillies would receive Hayes, known for his Gold-Glove defense, to replace Bohm, though he struggled at the plate in 2024. Adding Taillon would help bolster the Phillies’ rotation. The Pirates would gain Brandon Marsh, a strong outfielder who would complement Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz, and Keegan Thompson to help their bullpen, which struggled in 2024.
This trade would certainly be surprising and bold, but with less than 30 days before spring training, it’s a move that could very well materialize as teams look to make final adjustments before the season begins.
