After evaluating multiple options, the Las Vegas Raiders have chosen Pete Carroll as their new head coach, replacing Antonio Pierce. Carroll, who spent the past year as a senior advisor for the Seattle Seahawks, is making his return to an NFL head coaching role.
However, not everyone in the league is enthusiastic about the outcome of the Raiders’ coaching search.
NFL mocking Las Vegas Raiders after hiring coach Pete Carroll
The Las Vegas Raiders parted ways with Antonio Pierce after just one full season as head coach, during which he posted a 4-13 record. The task of steering the team back on course now falls to Pete Carroll.
However, Sportskeeda’s NFL insider Tony Pauline reports that the Raiders’ decision to hire Pete Carroll is being met with ridicule among NFL personnel attending the Shrine Bowl in Arlington, Texas.
According to Sportskeeda’s NFL insider Tony Pauline, the Raiders’ decision to hire Pete Carroll as head coach has been widely criticized by NFL personnel attending the Shrine Bowl in Arlington, Texas. Pauline reported, “The Raiders have faced significant ridicule here at Shrine practice for hiring Pete Carroll. The team, along with Tom Brady, initially wanted Liam Coen for the position, but he opted to join Jacksonville instead. Beyond an attempt to stabilize the franchise, Carroll’s hiring doesn’t seem to make much sense to anyone.”
Coach Pete Carroll brings an impressive résumé, including a Super Bowl victory and a 137-89-1 record during his time with the Seattle Seahawks. Before that, he held a 27-21 record with the New England Patriots and a 6-10 record with the New York Jets. At 73 years old, Carroll, the NFL’s oldest head coach, boasts a career record of 170-120-1.
Most expected the Raiders’ top choice to be former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who instead accepted the Chicago Bears’ head coaching role. The revelation that they pivoted to Liam Coen—who ultimately chose the Jacksonville Jaguars—has raised eyebrows.
Regardless, the Raiders can’t be pleased with the widespread ridicule over what many consider their most critical offseason decision.
