JUST IN: Astros Sign $200 Million Top Veteran Star Following Blockbuster Ryan Pressly Trade

The Houston Astros recently made a significant trade, sending closer Ryan Pressly to the Chicago Cubs. This move is part of a series of offseason changes for the Astros, but one major move still looms: re-signing infielder Alex Bregman. Despite the trade, Bregman remains a free agent, and the Pressly trade could play a crucial role in bringing him back.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the trade of Pressly is just the first step toward re-signing Bregman. Nightengale reports that the Astros needed to clear payroll to make room for Bregman’s potential return. Pressly, set to earn $14 million in 2025, had a no-trade clause that he waived for the deal, with the Cubs expected to cover much of that salary. In return, the Astros will receive a fringe prospect, which will help free up money for Bregman’s contract.

Second baseman Jose Altuve also recently mentioned he’d be open to changing positions to accommodate Bregman’s return. With Pressly’s contract off the books, the Astros are now in a stronger position to extend a competitive offer to Bregman, making his re-signing a realistic possibility.
