Major Recruitment: Phillies Adds A Generational Talented Star To Bolster Roster Against 2025 Season

This winter, the Philadelphia Phillies have the opportunity to bolster the back end of their rotation with a once-in-a-generation talent.

Phillies taking a look at Max Scherzer for potential signing

Superstar pitcher Max Scherzer remains available on the open market. According to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Ragazzo, the eight-time All-Star was recently scouted by multiple teams, including the Phillies, during a pitching session. Philadelphia’s interest in evaluating the veteran hurler suggests they might be considering pulling him off the free-agent scrap heap.

Scherzer is in the twilight of his MLB career, but the 40-year-old still showed he can deliver on the mound. Despite being limited to just nine games in 2024, he posted a solid 3.95 ERA and an impressive 1.154 WHIP, demonstrating his ability to pitch effectively even at this stage of his career.

Scherzer could be a huge addition to the Phillies in 2025

As he heads into his age-41 season, following $12.5 million in earnings during 2024, Scherzer presents himself as a seasoned veteran capable of bringing invaluable World Series championship experience to a highly talented Phillies squad. Notably, the team lacks a former champion in its core lineup, aside from Joe Ross, who won in 2019.

While Scherzer’s fastball has declined by nearly two mph over the past three seasons, now averaging 92.5 mph, he remains effective on the mound. His ability to induce chases (36.4 percent), generate whiffs (29.2 percent), and limit walks (5.6 percent) is still at a high level. Although he’s in the latter stages of his career, Scherzer could provide meaningful contributions to the Phillies at a cost-effective price, making him a valuable addition to their rotation.
