Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has expressed that he might leave the team due to the increasing media scrutiny he has faced. The NFL MVP made his comments during an exclusive interview on Thursday, suggesting that the pressure from the press and constant public focus on his contract situation are taking a toll on him both personally and professionally.
With Lamar Jackson committing two turnovers as the Baltimore Ravens lost 27-25 to the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round of the playoffs last Sunday, the narrative that Jackson struggles in the postseason is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
Jackson has been dominant in the regular season throughout his NFL career, winning two MVP awards and consistently leading his team to the postseason, but his success has yet to translate to the playoffs.
Even so, Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta is not interested in the narratives surrounding Jackson’s lack of postseason success.
“I can say there’s no player I’d rather have on my team than Lamar Jackson,” DeCosta said when asked what Jackson might do to improve his postseason record. “I believe he is the best quarterback in the league. So, that’s my solution to that question.”
Jackson, known for his electric playing style and leadership on the field, has been at the center of media attention ever since he entered the NFL as a rookie in 2018. While his dynamic playmaking ability has earned him a loyal following, Jackson’s negotiations over a new contract have been a point of contention. His recent comments indicate that the negative coverage surrounding his postseason performance.
“I’ve been handling a lot, and it’s getting to the point where I’m not sure how much more I can take,” Jackson said in the interview. “I love Baltimore, I love the fans, but I’m starting to wonder if I’ll be able to stay here after everything that’s happened. The scrutiny I face off the field is something I didn’t expect when I came into this league.”
The 26-year-old quarterback, who is widely regarded as one of the most talented and dynamic players in the league, has made it clear that the media’s focus on his contract negotiations and questions about his ability to lead the Ravens in the postseason have been difficult to navigate. Jackson has yet to sign a long-term extension with the Ravens, and speculation about his future in Baltimore has mounted in recent months. The team placed the franchise tag on him ahead of the 2023 season, and his contract situation remains unresolved.
Jackson has been the subject of intense media scrutiny, with many questioning his performance, as well as debating whether he can lead a team to a Super Bowl given the Ravens’ playoff struggles in recent years. The criticisms have become increasingly personal, with some pundits even questioning his work ethic and leadership abilities, a point Jackson addressed in the interview.
“I’ve always given everything to this game,” Jackson explained. “But it feels like no matter what I do, there’s always something to be criticized. The whole narrative that I can’t get it done in the playoffs… that’s something I’ve been trying to change, but it’s not easy when every little thing you do gets torn apart.”
Despite his frustration, Jackson emphasized that his love for football and commitment to his teammates remain intact. “It’s hard to explain, but I’m still passionate about playing the game,” he said. “I don’t know what the future holds, but I’m focused on getting better every day. I owe it to my teammates, the city of Baltimore, and to myself.”
The Ravens, for their part, have publicly supported Jackson throughout his career and have praised his leadership on and off the field. Team owner Steve Bisciotti and head coach John Harbaugh have both expressed their commitment to securing Jackson’s future in Baltimore, though the uncertainty surrounding his contract continues to linger.
As the offseason approaches, the NFL world will undoubtedly be watching closely to see how this situation unfolds. Will Lamar Jackson continue to lead the Ravens, or will the mounting pressure push him toward a new chapter in his career? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: the 2025 NFL offseason will be a critical one for both Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.
