Breaking: Blockbuster Cowboys Trade Lands Mega Star from 49ers

The Dallas Cowboys have made notable strides in improving their running back group, a key area of focus heading into the offseason. Some analysts have even suggested that drafting a running back in the first round could be a smart move, given how the unit performed a year ago.

With Dak Prescott expected to fully recover, the Cowboys’ run game appears to be in a better place than last season. At the very least, Prescott’s passing ability should help open up rushing opportunities.

However, there are still concerns that the current backfield might not be sufficient. That’s why Aaliyan Mohammed of Sporting News proposed a trade for Christian McCaffrey from the San Francisco 49ers. His suggested deal involves sending the No. 76 pick and a 2026 third-round pick to San Francisco.

“The Dallas Cowboys need a major shake-up in their backfield after ranking among the league’s worst rushing attacks last season,” Mohammed wrote. “They could pull off a blockbuster trade to acquire a superstar running back.

“The Cowboys signed Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders this offseason, but both players struggled last year and may not be reliable enough to lead the backfield. Dallas ranked sixth-worst in rushing yards and had just three runs of over 20 yards. While drafting a running back is an option, this trade for McCaffrey could land them one of the best players in the league.”

Is McCaffrey Healthy?

Adding McCaffrey would undoubtedly boost the Cowboys’ offense, but there are lingering concerns about his durability. Staying on the field has been a persistent issue throughout his career.

He played in only four games during the 2024 season, but 49ers general manager John Lynch remains optimistic.

“Christian’s doing really well,” Lynch said. “He was frustrated with how last season went, but he’s doing everything possible to prepare for this year. We’re hopeful he’ll have a tremendous season. When he’s healthy, he’s one of the best.”

Lynch added, “We’ll follow the medical staff’s guidance, but Christian has been relentless in his rehab. He’s the kind of guy you have to slow down because he works so hard. As my friend, [Steelers HC] Mike Tomlin, says, ‘It’s better to say ‘Woah’ than ‘Sic ‘em.’ Christian is definitely a ‘Woah’ guy.”

Is Trading for McCaffrey Worth It?

Giving up two draft picks for McCaffrey might be a gamble, but it could significantly improve the Cowboys’ offense. Despite the injury risk, having a player of McCaffrey’s caliber on the roster would make Dallas a stronger team.

At this point, the Cowboys are in a position to take calculated risks. If McCaffrey is available, why not take the shot?
