Rafael Devers is set to begin his ninth season with the Red Sox, but the 2025 campaign will bring a new experience for the star slugger.
After nearly a decade as Boston’s primary third baseman, Devers will transition to the designated hitter role when the Red Sox open their season against the Texas Rangers on Thursday. Taking over at third base will be Alex Bregman, the 2024 American League Gold Glove winner at the position, whom Boston signed to a three-year deal last month.
Although Devers had previously expressed his desire to remain at third base, the three-time All-Star remains fully committed to having a strong season in Boston.
“I’m ready to start the season. I’m feeling good,” Devers told WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford through translator Daveson Perez. “There’s no difference (in preparing for at-bats as a DH). I follow the same routine I always have. Nothing changes. I’m excited to get going. Spring training is way too long.”
Even if the switch to DH wasn’t Devers’ first choice, both he and other key members of the Red Sox have emphasized that winning is the top priority. As the highly anticipated season gets underway, manager Alex Cora believes this new lineup configuration gives Boston the best chance to succeed.
Fans can catch the Red Sox’s season opener with their revamped lineup on Thursday afternoon, starting at 2:30 p.m. ET on NESN.
