Breaking News: Done Deal!! Vikings Confirms Huge Deal For a Highly Versatile Pro Bowl QB In Blockbuster

The Minnesota Vikings lost Sam Darnold in free agency but now have J.J. McCarthy set to begin his rookie season. However, they may be looking at veteran star as a veteran backup option.

According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, Minnesota is considering adding top star, which would provide them with more flexibility. While McCarthy has been progressing well in his rehab, having a reliable backup is crucial.

He is more than capable of stepping in as a starter if needed. Plus, head coach Kevin O’Connell has a track record of maximizing quarterback performance, so he could thrive in his system.

That said, the former Titans quarterback hasn’t started a game since 2023, when he was competing with rookie Will Levis for the job. After losing that battle, he has remained a free agent. While signing him comes with some risk, his experience as a former Pro Bowler provides stability.

During his time in Tennessee, he played alongside top-tier talent like AJ Brown and Derrick Henry. Now, under O’Connell, he’d have the chance to lead a more explosive offense—making his potential signing seem increasingly likely.

Would the Vikings target Ryan Tannehill?

Tannehill likely still has something left in the tank, and one tough season shouldn’t be enough to keep him off an NFL roster. However, the game is changing.

The league is shifting away from traditional pocket passers in favor of dual-threat quarterbacks. While Tannehill has displayed some mobility, it’s not a defining strength of his game.

Circling back to Darnold, he and Tannehill share similar skill sets. However, Tannehill is the more accurate passer, while Darnold possesses a stronger arm.

Despite their differences, having a reliable backup is crucial, especially with McCarthy’s status still uncertain, even as his recovery progresses well. Minnesota wouldn’t want to enter the season scrambling for a quarterback.

While the Vikings have been linked to Aaron Rodgers, that scenario seems increasingly unlikely. Instead, securing a proven backup could be the smarter move. McCarthy may be mentally and physically ready for the transition, but having an experienced veteran behind him adds an extra layer of security.

Ultimately, there are several paths Minnesota could take, but McCarthy is the future. The organization will do whatever it takes to set him up for success in the NFL.

Although Tannehill had some tension with Levis in Tennessee, he would likely understand and embrace his role this time around.
