The Boston Red Sox are narrowing down their Opening Day roster ahead of their March 27 matchup against the Texas Rangers, making a pair of significant pitching decisions on Sunday.
Top pitching prospect Quinn Priester was optioned to Triple-A Worcester, clearing the way for Sean Newcomb to claim the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation. Priester, acquired in last year’s Nick Yorke trade with the Pirates, struggled this spring, posting a 4.82 ERA, 2.25 WHIP, and allowing a .359 batting average against over 9 1/3 innings. The 24-year-old also issued seven walks and surrendered two home runs. While a step back to Triple-A wasn’t the desired outcome, more seasoning could benefit the young right-hander.
Meanwhile, Newcomb earned his rotation spot after an impressive spring. The veteran lefty, signed to a minor league deal, dominated with a 0.63 ERA and 0.84 WHIP over 14 1/3 innings, allowing just nine hits without issuing a walk or giving up a homer.
Injuries to Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito, and Kutter Crawford have forced Boston to reshuffle its rotation plans to begin the 2025 season.
In the bullpen, the Red Sox granted veteran star his release after the veteran reliever exercised his opt-out clause. He struggled in camp, surrendering six earned runs on five hits and five walks across five innings, despite tallying eight strikeouts.

The bullpen is now expected to feature Aroldis Chapman, Liam Hendriks, Justin Slaten, Garrett Whitlock, Greg Weissert, Zack Kelly, Justin Wilson, and Brennan Bernardino, with Matt Moore providing additional depth at Triple-A.
In other developments, Kristian Campbell is expected to be the Opening Day second baseman, while Masataka Yoshida will begin the season on the injured list. Final roster decisions will be made in the coming days ahead of Thursday’s opener.
