JUST IN: Vikings Major Trade Lands Former NFL Player of the Year Quarterback

After missing the entire 2024 NFL season, former Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill is looking to revive his career this offseason. According to one report, the Minnesota Vikings could provide that opportunity.

Ryan Tannehill was originally selected by the Dolphins with the eighth overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. During his six seasons in Miami, he amassed 20,434 passing yards and 123 touchdowns, ranking third in franchise history behind Hall of Famers Dan Marino and Bob Griese.

Despite flashes of talent, Tannehill never fully lived up to his first-round expectations. In 2019, the Dolphins traded him and a sixth-round pick to the Titans for a 2020 fourth-round pick and a 2019 seventh-round pick.

While the report suggests no deal is imminent, the potential fit makes sense for both parties. The Vikings are seeking a veteran quarterback to support J.J. McCarthy without creating a full-blown competition in training camp.

Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports that the Vikings have engaged in discussions with the former Tennessee Titans quarterback about a potential deal. However, talks are ongoing, and nothing appears imminent at this point.

“The Vikings have had discussions with former (Tennessee) Titans QB Ryan Tannehill about a potential deal. Talks are ongoing and nothing is imminent as of right now,” Schultz tweeted.

For Tannehill, joining the Vikings as McCarthy’s mentor could prolong his NFL career. It offers him a chance to guide the next generation while staying ready to step in if an injury or poor performance opens the door for him to reclaim a starting role.

However, Tannehill will need to accept the reality of being a backup — something he struggled with last season while holding out for a starting job that never materialized. Perhaps a year away from football has given him a fresh perspective.
