With Opening Day 2025 just one week away, MLB spring training is nearing its conclusion. As the exhibition schedule winds down, the Boston Red Sox’s spring position battles are set to reveal their winners, including the competition for the closer role.
Kenley Jansen served as Boston’s primary closer in 2024 but left in free agency to join the Los Angeles Angels. In his absence, Liam Hendriks — who missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery — and newly signed free agent Aroldis Chapman have been vying for the Opening Day closer spot.
While the battle isn’t officially over, recent comments from Hendriks suggest a decision might already be clear.
According to MassLive’s Christopher Smith, Hendriks acknowledged that Boston manager Alex Cora is likely to choose Chapman due to his own spring struggles.
“I think it’s pretty obvious who deserves the spot based on spring performance… and it’s definitely not me,” Hendriks admitted. “I wanted to win it, but it’s not the end of the world if I don’t.”
“Things will play out how they play out, but if you’re talking about the best performer this spring, that’s Chapman. He’s been phenomenal.”
Hendriks’ assessment is hard to dispute. This spring marks his first since 2022, and he has yet to regain top form. In 6 1/3 innings, he has surrendered seven earned runs, two home runs, and 14 hits, with only four strikeouts, resulting in a 9.95 ERA and three saves.
In contrast, Chapman has impressed after signing a $10.75 million deal. Over 7 1/3 innings in eight appearances, he has allowed just two earned runs on three hits, striking out 14 batters with a 2.45 ERA and two holds.
The Red Sox hope Chapman’s strong performance will motivate Hendriks to improve. A bullpen featuring both relievers at their best would be a significant boost for Boston regardless of who officially takes the closer role.
Meeting these high expectations will be crucial for any success Alex Cora’s team hopes to achieve in 2025. As of now, the Red Sox are tied for the seventh-best World Series odds (+1800) on FanDuel Sportsbook.
