The Red Sox pitcher is returning to where his professional journey began.
The World Series champion has joined the San Diego Padres as a special assistant to CEO Erik Greupner, the team announced Thursday.
In this role, he will support various departments within the Padres organization and serve as a community ambassador to fans and the San Diego area, according to the team’s press release.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Jake back to the Padres after an exceptional playing career,” Greupner said. “In addition to his on-field accomplishments, Jake embodies a passionate, competitive spirit and leadership qualities that align perfectly with our organizational values. His experience, insights, and connections in the game will be invaluable as we continue our pursuit of a World Series Championship for San Diego and our fans.”
Drafted by the Padres in 1999, Peavy spent the first half of his 15-year MLB career with San Diego, earning the National League Cy Young Award in 2007. He joined the Red Sox in 2013 after being traded by the Chicago White Sox.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the chance to reunite with my Padres family,” Peavy said in the release. “San Diego has always held a special place in my heart. From the moment I was drafted to this very day, I’ve been a Padre through and through. I’m excited to work with this talented group and contribute however I can to the success of this great organization.”

During his time with the Red Sox, Peavy recorded a 4.48 ERA over 188 2/3 innings, with a 5-10 record in 30 starts. After being traded to the San Francisco Giants in July 2014, he capped off his career by winning his second World Series title that same season. Peavy is one of just 10 players in MLB history to win back-to-back championships with different teams.
