Groundbreaking News: Alabama Coach Nate Oats Drops Overwhelming Derrion Reid for Vanderbilt Game

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The No. 4 Alabama men’s basketball team could see the return of freshman forward  when they face Vanderbilt  evening.

He has missed the past two games due to a lower-body injury, was ruled out ahead of last Saturday’s 102-97 victory over Kentucky. Averaging just over eight points and three rebounds per game, his absence has been noticeable.

“He’s making progress every day,” head coach Nate Oats said. “He’s eager to get back on the court, but we’re not going to rush it and risk further injury.” Oats mentioned that Reid will likely be listed as questionable for the game against the Commodores.

Reid’s strengths—explosiveness, athleticism, and attacking the rim—are critical to his performance, Oats explained, emphasizing the risks of rushing his return and the potential for lingering effects that could impact the season.

“With the way he plays, he won’t be at his best if he’s dealing with an injury that affects his explosiveness,” Oats said, adding that he wants to see Reid “flying around” on the court.

Oats had previously hoped Reid might return this week if he couldn’t play against Kentucky. Reid last saw action on Jan. 11, logging 15 minutes against then-No. 10 Texas A&M, where he scored 11 points and grabbed two rebounds. He also missed Alabama’s game against Ole Miss last Tuesday.
