Huge Boost: Vikings Confirms Mouth-watery Deal For a Highly Sought-after Pro Bowl QB

The Minnesota Vikings have pivoted fast after pulling out of the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Vikings have officially ended their pursuit of the future Hall of Famer, leaving the door wide open for another experienced quarterback to step in.

With just J.J. McCarthy and Brett Rypien—who have only four combined NFL starts—on the roster, Minnesota wasted no time adding a seasoned arm to the quarterback room. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin had hinted at top star being a perfect fit, and now the Vikings have done just that.

“Carson Wentz was on the radar too, but he is younger, has fresher starting experience, and brings fiery leadership that head coach Kevin O’Connell will appreciate alongside the rising McCarthy,” Benjamin noted.

Top veteran, fresh off a 2024 campaign with the Cleveland Browns where he started seven games and threw for 2,121 yards and 13 touchdowns, brings instant credibility. Over his 10-year career, Winston has piled up over 24,000 passing yards, 154 touchdowns, a Pro Bowl appearance, and plenty of big-play ability—even if turnovers have occasionally followed him.

For the Vikings, this move is as much about insurance as it is leadership. Should McCarthy need more time before stepping into the starting role, Winston gives Minnesota a proven option who can keep the offense competitive right away.

The Rodgers dream is over, but the Vikings just landed one of the most intriguing veteran QBs on the market.
