Eddie Howe confirm £57m double injury concern as key man ruled out v Fulham

Newcastle United handed double injury concern from the defeat to AC Milan in the Champions League.

Both Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon were injured during Newcastle United’s 2-1 loss to AC Milan, according to manager Eddie Howe.

The Magpies were eliminated from the Champions League on Wednesday night after goals from Christian Pulisic and Samuel Chukwueze in the second half cancelled out Joelinton’s opener.

A win would have qualified United for the final 16 of the competition, while a draw would have qualified them for the Europa League. Howe’s side, on the other hand, is utterly out of Europe.

Their attention will return to the Premier League, beginning with Fulham at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Kieran Trippier is suspended for the game due to amassing five yellow cards, but he will be checked by United’s medics alongside Gordon.

In the 62nd minute of the match against Milan, the pair were replaced.

“I think he picked up something in the first half,” Howe said of Trippier. I’m not sure what it was at this point in time. He wanted to continue after halftime, but then he signaled that he couldn’t.”

When asked if Gordon has had an injury for a long time, Howe answered, “I wouldn’t say a long time, no.” He mentioned today that he had a hamstring awareness. We’re not sure if it’s an injury because he can still sort of play, but not at the high level he has for a long time.

“I think he had an issue full sprinting but Anthony is a very positive lad, he thinks he’s fine.”

Newcastle, seventh in the Premier League rankings and seven points below the top four, is looking to get back on track after losing three consecutive games.

Following Fulham, Howe’s men will face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

“I said to the players after the game that this game stops for no one so we have another game in two days and the challenge isn’t going to be easy,” Howe added.

“Fulham will come here and make it very difficult for us so absolutely we have to park it and adjust. That’ll be a difficult game, even more difficult after today’s result.

“We have to acknowledge that and then of course we go to Chelsea. The Premier League and this season is unrelenting but we’ve tried to embrace it and use it as a positive.”
