Just In: Orioles Unexpectedly Cuts 7 Top veterans Including 2 key prospects From Roster

The Orioles trimmed their spring training roster by seven players, headlined by catcher and corner infielder, the organization’s top two prospects.

Mayo has been optioned to the minor league side at Twin Lakes Park. Basallo, along with outfielder Daz Cameron, utility player Nick Gordon, and pitchers Corbin Martin, Levi Stoudt, and Thaddeus Ward, were reassigned to minor league camp.

The Orioles now have 41 players remaining in camp, including six non-roster invitees.

Charlie Morton was originally scheduled to make his fourth spring outing tonight after throwing six shutout innings in his previous appearance, but lefty Cade Povich will take his place.

There’s no injury concern for Morton; he’s pitching on a back field today to build up to six innings. He’s expected to start Sunday’s Grapefruit League finale against the Braves in North Port, setting him up as the team’s No. 2 starter.

Morton would then be lined up to face the Blue Jays during the season-opening series at Rogers Centre. Toronto has most of its regulars in Sarasota tonight, including former Orioles outfielder Anthony Santander.

Jorge Mateo is making his second appearance of the spring, starting at second base. Jordan Westburg will bat leadoff and play third, while Jackson Holliday hits ninth and starts at shortstop.

Adley Rutschman is behind the plate, Tyler O’Neill is in right field, Colton Cowser is in left, and Ryan O’Hearn will serve as the designated hitter.
