According to Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus, the Knicks should consider targeting Detroit Pistons center Isaiah Stewart in a trade this offseason. Pincus believes Stewart could help address New York’s need for added toughness and physicality in the frontcourt, providing a strong complement to their current big men.
Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report noted, “New York has limited flexibility and few trade assets. While Robinson’s $13 million contract for 2025-26 is movable, he plays a crucial defensive role alongside Towns when healthy. The Knicks could also consider a smaller trade, possibly moving the younger big (Hukporti) for a cost-effective role player. Additionally, they hold a first-round pick from the Wizards, but it comes with heavy protections. … The Pistons may be reluctant to part with Stewart, but his physical edge would certainly appeal to Thibodeau.”
Stewart would be a natural fit for Tom Thibodeau’s system, bringing a blend of versatility and grit that aligns with the coach’s defensive-minded philosophy. The 23-year-old Rochester native is in his fifth NBA season, all spent with Detroit, where he has primarily served as the team’s backup center this year.
Stewart could provide what the Knicks are currently missing in the frontcourt
Through 62 games this season, including three starts, Isaiah Stewart is averaging 5.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game. Despite the Detroit Pistons emerging as one of the league’s surprise teams with a 37-31 record and holding a playoff position in the Eastern Conference, Stewart’s role has diminished significantly compared to previous seasons. His reduced playing time could make him a more attainable trade target for a team like the Knicks seeking added physicality and depth in the frontcourt.
While Mitchell Robinson has been a key contributor for the Knicks, his recurring injury history could push New York to seek a more durable option to bolster their depth. Isaiah Stewart, despite dealing with injuries earlier in his career, has remained healthy throughout this season, which could signal a positive trend for his future availability.
So far, the Pistons haven’t shown any clear intent to move Stewart, but that could shift in the offseason as Detroit reassesses its roster and long-term direction. If Stewart does hit the trade market, the Knicks would be wise to inquire about his availability. His toughness, defensive versatility, and rebounding could provide exactly what New York’s frontcourt rotation is currently lacking.
