Breaking: NY Rangers Complete Deal for Top Experienced All-Star but This Could Only Mean Bad News

Jonathan Quick’s one-year extension with the New York Rangers ensures that the team will head into next season with the same goaltending duo that has carried them through this year. This decision raises questions about the future of goaltending prospect Dylan Garand, as many had expected him to begin transitioning into the backup role next year with Quick’s retirement. Instead, Garand is now likely to spend another season with the Hartford Wolf Pack in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Garand has posted a .913 save percentage and a 2.77 goals-against average in the AHL this season, showing solid improvement after recording just a .898 save percentage last year and .894 the year before. While his progress has been steady, the Rangers appear cautious about rushing his development, wanting to make sure they maximize his potential.

There is debate about whether another year in the minors will benefit Garand. The Rangers see him as a promising young goaltender and have been grooming him to eventually become a long-term partner for Vezina-winning goalie Igor Shesterkin. Given his age, another season in the AHL likely won’t hinder his growth, but he needs to establish himself as the team’s third-choice netminder.

For several years, when injuries to Quick or Shesterkin occurred, the Rangers have relied on Louis Domingue as the right-handed option. Though Domingue is a capable backup, this has limited Garand’s opportunities to gain NHL experience, as he has mostly sat on the bench without seeing game action. To take the next step in his development, Garand needs exposure to NHL shooters, and with Quick extending his stay, this will be a key area of focus moving forward.
