Major Update: Phillies Shockingly Confirms More Cuts From Team

The Philadelphia Phillies have begun trimming their roster, sending players unlikely to make the Opening Day lineup elsewhere. Among the most notable names in this round of moves were pitcher and outfielder. Both were projected to be ready by 2025 but have spent extended time developing in the Phillies’ farm system.

Top star may be nearing his last chance with the Phillies if he doesn’t show improvement at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. In 2024, he struggled with command, posting a 6.46 ERA over 24 starts and issuing 78 walks in 108 innings.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Rincones Jr. has been a bright spot, displaying solid defense and power by hitting three home runs in just 20 at-bats. The 24-year-old has the potential to contribute as a reserve bat for the Phillies at some point this season.

None of the recent roster moves were surprising, as players like Matt Kroon, Otto Kemp, and Paul McIntosh were unlikely to make the Opening Day roster. However, as the eighth and tenth-ranked prospects in the organization, Abel and Rincones Jr. have drawn significant attention in Spring Training.

The 23-year-old Mick Abel has pitched in just one Spring Training game this season, allowing three earned runs in 1.2 innings. He is set to begin the season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and unless injuries force the Phillies’ hand, he is likely to remain there before either being traded or designated for assignment.
