Breaking News: Phillies Make Three Shocking Roster Moves, Including Former Top Prospect

The Philadelphia Phillies are gradually finalizing their roster in preparation for Opening Day. Following a series of moves earlier in the week, the team made three additional roster adjustments, all involving pitchers.

Griff McGarry was reassigned to Minor League camp after a difficult spring training, during which he posted a 16.20 ERA in just 1.1 innings pitched. The 25-year-old, once a top Phillies prospect, has faced an up-and-down few seasons and will aim to regain stability in the minors this year.

Jean Cabrera was also sent down but was optioned to Reading, the Phillies’ Double-A affiliate. He performed well in spring training, recording a 3.00 ERA and five strikeouts over three innings.

The most notable player reassigned was Moises Chace. Acquired by the Orioles at the 2024 trade deadline—along with Seth Johnson—in exchange for Gregory Soto, Chace only pitched one inning this spring but didn’t allow any baserunners. He has quickly climbed the Phillies’ prospect rankings and now sits at No. 5, according to MLB.com.

With Gregory Soto struggling in Baltimore, the prospects acquired by Phillies general manager Dave Dombrowski have garnered increased interest. Moises Chace, in particular, has risen through the Phillies’ farm system and will be closely watched as he begins the season at Double-A Reading. Given that Philadelphia acquired him in exchange for a player they were likely to move on from, his development will be a key storyline.

Meanwhile, the Phillies are finalizing their 26-man roster for Opening Day. They will kick off the 2025 MLB season on Thursday, March 27, in Washington, D.C., against the Washington Nationals.
