The Miami Marlins overhauled their roster ahead of the 2024 MLB trade deadline, but one star remains: Sandy Alcántara. The 2022 NL Cy Young winner had a down year in 2023 before missing the entire 2024 season due to injury. However, this spring, the right-hander has looked like his dominant self again, making it likely that Miami will eventually trade him as well.
FanSided’s Jacob Mount recently proposed a blockbuster deal that would send Alcántara to the talent-loaded Boston Red Sox, a move that could significantly bolster their rotation.
Proposed Trade:
Boston Red Sox receive: RHP Sandy Alcántara
Miami Marlins receive: OF Wilyer Abreu, SS Marcelo Mayer (No. 3 prospect), SS/2B Mikey Romero (No. 11 prospect)
FanSided’s Jacob Mount suggests this blockbuster deal, arguing that while Wilyer Abreu had an impressive rookie season, Boston might consider moving him with top prospect Roman Anthony ready to take over. Another outfield option, Kristian Campbell, provides additional depth.
Marcelo Mayer, Boston’s No. 3 prospect, is also included in the proposed trade. Despite his high potential, he is somewhat blocked at the major league level due to the Red Sox’s infield depth. Mayer has excelled in Double-A and is expected to debut in 2025, bringing a strong bat, solid power, and good defensive ability.

While this trade would be a major win for Miami, it remains uncertain whether Boston would be willing to part with both Mayer and Abreu in exchange for Alcántara. Losing another infield prospect in Mikey Romero makes the deal even tougher for the Red Sox.
However, the idea of Boston acquiring Alcántara makes sense. While the specific details of the trade might need tweaking, the Red Sox could explore a version of this deal to add a proven ace to their rotation.
