MAJOR BREAKING: Yankees Sign Former Rivals Top Prospect

The New York Yankees have signed former top prospect Dominic Smith to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training, according to YES Network’s Jack Curry.

Smith, the 11th overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft by the New York Mets, was once the team’s top prospect and enjoyed significant success in the minors. He debuted in the majors on August 11, 2017, but struggled to find consistent success at the MLB level. Over six seasons with the Mets, Smith hit .246/.308/.424 with 46 home runs. The Mets declined to offer him a contract after the 2022 season, leading him to sign with the Washington Nationals.

In 2024, Smith’s journey included minor-league deals with the Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox, and Cincinnati Reds. He played 93 major-league games that year, batting .233 with six home runs and 34 RBIs. Now, Smith aims to secure a roster spot with the Yankees in 2025 as depth behind Paul Goldschmidt and as an outfield option.

An MLB scout praised the Yankees’ decision to sign Smith, calling him a good defensive player and a reliable depth piece. Speaking anonymously to NJ Advance Media’s Randy Miller, the scout noted that while Smith isn’t known for his power or speed, he offers valuable experience at first base and the corner outfield positions.

“This is a good signing for the Yankees,” the scout said. “He’s a good kid, a good defensive player, and a veteran presence. Smith will likely hit around .250 with doubles and provides solid defense at first base while catching what’s needed in left field. He’s hungry and has never been part of a winning team, which adds to his drive.”

Over his career, Smith has appeared in 693 MLB games, hitting .246 with 64 home runs and 259 RBIs. With the Yankees, he will have another chance to carve out a meaningful role at the major-league level.
