The Orioles entered the offseason needing to fill a significant gap in their starting rotation. Last year, they acquired Corbin Burnes from the Milwaukee Brewers, and after an impressive season, he hit free agency. However, rather than returning to Baltimore, Burnes signed a lucrative contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Now, the Orioles face another setback as Grayson Rodriguez is set to miss time due to an elbow issue. The right-hander is dealing with soreness in the back of his elbow and will begin the 2025 season on the injured list.
With their rotation shorthanded, Baltimore could explore a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Mariners for ace Luis Castillo. The 32-year-old right-hander is entering the third year of his five-year, $100 million-plus contract, making him a potential target for a win-now Orioles team.
A trade package for Castillo would likely center around outfielder Heston Kjerstad, a former top prospect who has shown promise but is currently blocked in Baltimore’s crowded outfield. Kjerstad, 26, has a smooth left-handed swing and a disciplined approach at the plate, making him an attractive trade chip.
Another prospect who could be included is Dylan Beavers, a talented 23-year-old outfielder with high potential, though he still needs further development. Additionally, catching prospect Samuel Basallo or power-hitting catcher Willems, 21, could be part of the deal, giving the Mariners a mix of young talent to bolster their farm system.
This trade would benefit both teams—Baltimore would secure a frontline starter to help weather Rodriguez’s absence, while Seattle, which has an abundance of starting pitching, could acquire three promising position players to strengthen its future lineup.
