It’s no secret that the Carolina Panthers need to prioritize strengthening their defense this offseason. General manager Dan Morgan must also find a true No. 1 wide receiver to support quarterback Bryce Young.
As it turns out, a familiar face to head coach Dave Canales could be on the market.
This offseason has already seen plenty of drama, with several players on the move. One major trade involved the Washington Commanders acquiring Deebo Samuel Sr., while another talented young receiver is now looking for a fresh start following a significant development.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network—later confirmed by other respected insiders—D.K. Metcalf has requested a trade from the Seattle Seahawks. Additionally, the NFC West team has agreed to explore potential trade options to honor his request.
Panthers Should Pursue a Trade for D.K. Metcalf
Morgan has been careful with his assets so far, but elite players like Metcalf rarely become available in their prime. While the Panthers may not have the most enticing trade package, they should at least make an effort.
Canales has experience working with Metcalf from their time together in Seattle. The wideout has also caught passes from Young during offseason workouts and spoken highly of the Heisman Trophy winner. Adding him to the roster would be a significant upgrade over Carolina’s current receiving corps.
Metcalf’s arrival would allow Adam Thielen to return to his natural role as a short-to-intermediate route specialist. Meanwhile, young receivers like Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker still have potential but aren’t yet at Metcalf’s level.
This upcoming season is crucial for Young, who showed significant improvement in the latter half of 2024. Metcalf is a superior option to any free-agent receiver or incoming rookie, making him an exciting potential addition. However, there are several obstacles to making this deal a reality.

The Challenges of Acquiring Metcalf
Seattle won’t trade Metcalf cheaply. Any deal would likely require a first-round pick—possibly more—as well as a young receiver to soften the loss. The more teams that enter the bidding war, the steeper the price will become.
There’s also the financial aspect. Metcalf is set to earn $31.87 million in 2025. Any team acquiring him would likely need to restructure his contract immediately to lessen the short-term financial strain. This is particularly important for the Panthers, who currently have $29.82 million in available cap space.
Additionally, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Metcalf prefers to join a contender, which could hurt Carolina’s chances. However, selling him on Young’s progress, Canales’ system, and anticipated defensive improvements might help if the trade compensation is right.
Morgan has been cautious about making reckless moves that could set the franchise back—mistakes that plagued previous regimes. While acquiring Metcalf might be a long shot at this stage of the rebuild, the Panthers should at least explore the possibility. Failing to make an effort would suggest a lack of true ambition.
