The Colorado Avalanche have reached an agreement with goaltender, securing him for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. Scheel has been playing with the Colorado Eagles this season, where he has performed well in net.
In 11 games with the Colorado Eagles this season, top star has recorded an impressive 8-1-2 record with a .911 save percentage, including back-to-back shutouts last month. The 25-year-old previously played for the Texas Stars and Chicago Wolves, both AHL affiliates of their respective NHL teams.
This signing adds goaltending depth for the Avalanche, who have already made multiple moves at the position this season, acquiring Scott Wedgewood and Mackenzie Blackwood in trades. With the team preparing for potential injuries leading up to and during the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, adding another goaltender provides extra security.

While the move doesn’t continue the Avalanche’s unexpected “wood” theme in net—a trend fans had been enjoying—it reinforces the most crucial position in hockey. Scheel is unlikely to see NHL action unless injuries arise, but given Colorado’s history with goaltender injuries, anything is possible.
Scott Wedgewood is expected to start tonight as the Avalanche take on the Pittsburgh Penguins.
