Breaking; Doe Deal: Sabres Officially Signs a Highly Experienced Physically Talented Star

The Buffalo Sabres made headlines by finalizing a contract extension with top veteran star. The forward has signed a two-year, $8 million deal, keeping him with the team through the 2026-27 season. The extension carries an average annual cap hit of $4 million.

He was acquired by Buffalo in 2023, has become a key piece of their forward group. His physical presence and two-way play have made him a valuable asset as the Sabres continue building toward playoff contention.

Sabres Sign Jordan Greenway Extension

Jordan Greenway has spent his eight-year NHL career with the Minnesota Wild and Buffalo Sabres. The Canton, New York native has recorded three goals and five assists (eight points) in 26 games so far this season.

From an advanced stats perspective, Greenway has a Corsi For percentage (CF%) of 45.0, indicating that his team controls the puck less often when he’s on the ice. His relative Corsi (-8.1) suggests that the Sabres generate significantly more shot attempts when he’s off the ice.

Despite these numbers, Buffalo sees value in his size, physicality, and defensive play, securing him with a two-year extension to keep him in their lineup through the 2026-27 season.

Jordan Greenway has compiled 55 goals and 104 assists (159 points) in 427 career NHL games. Originally drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the second round (50th overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft, Greenway has established himself as a physical, two-way forward.

The 28-year-old has also represented the United States on the international stage. He was part of the gold medal-winning team at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship and later competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics. His participation in the Olympics was historic, as he became the first African-American player to represent Team USA in men’s Olympic hockey.

Now with the Buffalo Sabres, Greenway has secured his place with the team through the 2026-27 season, continuing to bring size, experience, and defensive reliability to their lineup.

What It Means

Jordan Greenway brings an imposing presence to the ice with his 6-foot-6, 230-plus-pound frame. Throughout his career with the Minnesota Wild and Buffalo Sabres, he has primarily served as a bottom-six forward, a role he is expected to continue in Buffalo.

Originally set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, Greenway was viewed as a potential affordable rental option with a $3 million cap hit. However, the Sabres opted to secure his services long-term, signing him to a two-year extension that will keep him in Buffalo through the 2026-27 season. His size, defensive reliability, and physical play make him a valuable asset as the Sabres continue building their roster.

One of Jordan Greenway’s biggest challenges throughout his career has been consistency, particularly on the offensive side. His scoring has fluctuated, but his physical presence and defensive play have remained reliable. Greenway is known for using his size effectively, throwing his weight around, and playing a hard-nosed style that fits well in a bottom-six role.

With interest likely from other teams, there was some uncertainty about whether the Sabres would be able to re-sign him. However, with his new two-year deal in place, Greenway can now focus solely on hockey, contributing to Buffalo’s lineup as they continue their rebuilding efforts and push toward playoff contention.
