Bills perfect trade lands top-tier replacement for cornerback Rasul Douglas

Under Sean McDermott, the Buffalo Bills have consistently maintained a strong secondary, even in the absence of key players like Jordan Poyer, Micah Hyde, and Tre’Davious White. Although the 2024 season saw a restructured defensive backfield, it was far from the team’s biggest weakness. McDermott’s background as a former college defensive back has played a crucial role in the unit’s development and stability.

One of Buffalo’s biggest missteps in 2022 was drafting cornerback Kaiir Elam with expectations of him becoming an immediate impact player. Instead, his draft classmate, Christian Benford, emerged as the more reliable starter.

In 2023, the Bills addressed their secondary struggles by acquiring cornerback Rasul Douglas from the Green Bay Packers. The trade was necessary after Tre’Davious White suffered a torn Achilles, and with Elam proving to be a liability, Douglas brought much-needed stability. His presence helped Buffalo reach the divisional round of the playoffs.

Douglas played his first full season with the Bills in 2024, but it could also be his last, as he is set to become a free agent. There is a strong possibility that he will be playing elsewhere in 2025. If that happens, the Bills should consider a top-tier replacement—cornerback Byron Murphy Jr.

Byron Murphy Jr. Would Be a Great Fit for Buffalo

Murphy, who earned his first Pro Bowl selection this past season, is expected to draw significant interest in free agency. He spent his first four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, where he was a solid contributor, including a four-interception season in 2021. In 2023, he signed with the Minnesota Vikings and became a key part of their aggressive, physical defense under Brian Flores.

Murphy had a breakout year in 2024, recording a career-high six interceptions (nine over the past two seasons) and 14 pass deflections. His ability to play both inside and outside makes him an ideal fit for McDermott’s versatile secondary.

According to Spotrac, Murphy’s market value is projected at $22.1 million per year, which would be a significant financial challenge for the Bills. However, general manager Brandon Beane has a reputation for working magic when it comes to contract negotiations.

If Douglas departs in free agency, Buffalo should strongly consider pursuing Murphy as a replacement to maintain a high-caliber secondary.
