Top stars future with the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles may be uncertain.
The 30-year-old tight end, a second-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, has been a key contributor over seven seasons, tallying 4,085 receiving yards, 349 receptions, and 24 touchdowns while excelling as a run blocker.
However, his durability remains a concern, as he has missed 22 games since 2020, including seven last season.
He carries a $12 million cap hit for 2025, but if the Eagles designate him as a post-June 1 cut, they could free up $6.6 million in cap space, per Bleeding Green Nation. He is under contract through the 2025 season before becoming a free agent.
Philadelphia Eagles meet with top tight end prospect at NFL scouting combine
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Devin Jackson, the Eagles met with Texas tight end Gunnar Helm at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Helm is considered one of the top tight ends in the draft and is projected to be a mid-round selection.
The 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end told The Inquirer that he enjoyed his meeting with the Eagles and sees similarities between himself and backup tight end Grant Calcaterra.

“I think my body is pretty similar to Calcaterra. I love watching him. I love watching Dallas Goedert—obviously, he’s been with the Eagles for a long time,” Helm said. “I like to say I take a lot of stuff from his game when I watch him on film. To be able to learn from Dallas Goedert and Calcaterra in that offense, and play alongside guys like Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley, blocking for them would be a blessing.”
In his senior season at Texas, Helm recorded 60 receptions for 786 yards and seven touchdowns. ESPN’s Mel Kiper ranks him as the sixth-best tight end prospect in this year’s draft.
Jackson noted that adding Helm to the Eagles’ tight end group would provide another quality receiving option with similar traits to Goedert, including the ability to stretch the seam, find soft spots in zone coverage, and generate yards after the catch.
