The Detroit Red Wings have traded goaltender to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for future considerations. The move clears cap space and opens up a roster spot for Detroit as the trade deadline approaches.
Red Wings, Ville Husso part ways
Ville Husso was selected 94th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2014 NHL Draft, carrying high expectations that he ultimately struggled to fulfill. As a result, he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings on July 8, 2022, in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. Initially, Husso performed well, proving to Detroit that they had made a solid acquisition.
However, injuries quickly derailed his time with the Red Wings. Just as he recovered from one setback, another would occur, preventing him from maintaining consistency. Below is a list of his injury history while with Detroit:
Husso wrapped up the 2024-25 season with the Red Wings posting a 1-5-2 record, a 3.69 goals-against average (GAA), and a .866 save percentage. His struggles became so pronounced that Detroit sent him down to their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, where he recorded an 8-4 record with a 2.70 GAA and a .892 save percentage. His time with the Red Wings concludes with a career record of 36-32-11, a 3.26 GAA, and a .892 save percentage, along with four shutouts.
As for the Ducks, they will place Husso with their AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls for the time being
The Ducks have limited time to evaluate Husso, as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) after this season. His health will play a crucial role in determining whether Anaheim offers him a contract. When healthy, Husso has the potential to be a reliable starting goaltender, but his injury history raises questions about his long-term fit. If he doesn’t stay in Anaheim, his next destination remains uncertain.
This trade could also hint at a potential move involving John Gibson. The veteran goaltender has been the subject of trade rumors for the past few years, and with the deadline approaching, this may be the opportunity for the Ducks to make a deal. It’s a situation worth monitoring in the coming weeks.
In other Red Wings news, forward Andrew Copp has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after undergoing successful surgery to repair his left pectoral tendon. His recovery timeline is expected to be 4-6 months. Copp appeared in 56 games this season, recording 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points.
