Longtime San Diego Padres infielder remains a free agent as the 2025 MLB season approaches. Could the New York Yankees be a realistic destination for the 2023 Gold Glove winner? Spotrac estimates Kim’s market value at four years and $49 million, but with spring training nearing and Kim still unsigned, it’s unlikely he’ll secure a deal at that level.
Kim’s 2024 season was cut short due to a shoulder injury, and his recovery from surgery will extend beyond Opening Day. This situation may force the 29-year-old to accept a one- or two-year contract, presenting an opportunity for Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, who is seeking infield depth after Gleyber Torres signed with the Detroit Tigers.
FOX Sports’ Deesha Thosar predicts Kim could join the Yankees, noting his defensive versatility and baseball IQ would be invaluable for a team plagued by baserunning struggles, defensive errors, and mental lapses in 2024. “The Yankees don’t need more flashy signings; they need a dynamic, Gold Glove-caliber player like Kim who can quietly elevate their performance,” Thosar wrote.
Adding Kim could complete the Yankees’ offseason roster overhaul, which included the acquisitions of former MVPs Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt. This retooling follows the loss of star outfielder Juan Soto to the New York Mets, signaling a shift in the Yankees’ approach to building a more balanced lineup.
