Just In: Former Cubs Top Star Sends Message to Franchise of Possible Return to Team

Former Chicago Cubs first baseman will be remembered as one of the franchise’s top players. He played a key role in helping the Cubs secure their 2016 World Series title, but his future with the team became uncertain just a few years later. By 2021, the Cubs opted to part ways with the aging veteran, a decision that seemed justified at the time. He was no longer the player he once was, a decline that became even more apparent during his tenure with the New York Yankees. In 2024, he was among the league’s worst performers.

Now a free agent, Anthony Rizzo has yet to secure a new team, as there appears to be limited interest in a 35-year-old first baseman who has struggled on both offense and defense in recent seasons. Unfortunately, he seems to recognize his situation.

“I want to play. I want to win. And I love talking the game with pitchers, with hitters. There’s so much to dive into. Everything that goes into it, on the field, off the field, I’ll still be talking about it with guys. We’ll just see if I continue playing,” Rizzo told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Despite his recent struggles, Rizzo’s experience and leadership could still make him a valuable clubhouse presence. If he doesn’t land a major league deal soon, he may have to accept a minor league contract with an invitation to big league spring training.
