The Boston Red Sox are facing a dilemma at third base, with both Alex Bregman and Rafael Devers on the roster. The front office appears to prefer Bregman at the position while shifting Devers to designated hitter, but Devers is reportedly unwilling to move. If the two sides can’t come to an agreement, Devers could eventually push for an exit from Boston, though that hasn’t happened yet.
Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently proposed a trade scenario in which the Red Sox send Devers to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for outfielder/designated hitter and catcher Moises Ballesteros, the Cubs’ No. 3 prospect.
Rymer pointed out that the Cubs had previously pursued Bregman with a four-year, $115 million offer but ended up signing Justin Turner, who is now 40 and primarily a first baseman or DH. He suggested that Devers would be a better fit for Chicago’s roster, while Suzuki’s role as the Cubs’ DH is somewhat uncertain.
However, this trade proposal seems like a significant underpay for the Cubs. Devers is an elite talent, and acquiring him would likely require a much larger return—potentially two to four additional high-caliber prospects. While Suzuki could be a key piece in a trade package, this specific offer likely wouldn’t even keep Boston engaged in negotiations.
