The St. Louis Cardinals are allegedly interested in selling right-handed pitcher. According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, opposing clubs believe the management intends to minimize salary while developing younger pitching. Fedde, who had a solid year and signed a team-friendly contract, could be traded before the season starts.
Erick Fedde, who the Cardinals acquired from the Chicago White Sox in the transaction that sent Tommy Edman and Michael Kopech to the Los Angeles Dodgers, may soon be on the move again. After posting a 3.72 ERA in 55 2/3 innings with the Cardinals, his future with the team could be jeopardized as they want to develop their younger pitching at the MLB level. Young arms Michael McGreevy and André Pallante might step in if the organization trades Fedde this season. Other elite prospects, such as Tink Hence, Quinn Mathews, and Tekoah Roby, could get time in the majors if the Cardinals want to become younger in their rotation.
This offseason, the Cardinals have prioritized cutting their budget by letting Paul Goldschmidt and Andrew Kittredge depart, shopping Nolan Arenado, and avoiding major league free-agent acquisitions. Fedde is owed $7.5 million for one more year, so they may attempt to trade him and reallocate funds to help them compete in 2026 and later.
Who could be interested?
Fedde, who has a team-friendly deal and impressive stats, could pique attention if the Cardinals shop him during spring training. The New York Mets shut down Frankie Montas for 6-8 weeks due to a high-grade lat strain, the spring’s first severe pitching injury. Although the team has stated that they are not looking for another arm, it is difficult to believe they will not consider a move for Fedde if he is available at a reasonable price. Other pitching injuries this spring may make Fedde a sought-after rental. The Cardinals might possibly deal him at the deadline, as contenders seek to add depth for a postseason push.
