JUST IN: Rangers Receive ‘big’ J.T. Miller update as key injury setback confirmed

Adam Fox netted the go-ahead goal at 11:26 of the third period, while J.T. Miller scored twice as the New York Rangers came from behind to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 on Sunday.

Will Cuylle found the back of the net on the power play, and Jimmy Vesey notched his 100th NHL goal for the Rangers. Igor Shesterkin made 30 saves, while Miller, a Pittsburgh native, opened the scoring in the first period and sealed the win with an empty-net goal late in the game.

Ryan Shea tallied two third-period goals—his first of the season—to briefly put the Penguins ahead 3-2.

Vesey evened the score 4:21 into the third, and Fox, extending his point streak to six games, gave New York the lead just over seven minutes later.

Evgeni Malkin scored Pittsburgh’s other goal, while Sidney Crosby contributed an assist, making him the ninth player in NHL history to record 17 or more 60-point seasons. Erik Karlsson also added an assist, extending his point streak to seven games. Joel Blomqvist stopped 11 shots in net for the Penguins.

Pittsburgh’s Matt Grzelcyk exited in the first period after taking a hit in the corner from Matt Rempe. Meanwhile, Rangers forward Chris Kreider took part in warmups but sat out with an upper-body injury.

Team Notes:

  • The Rangers bounced back from an 8-2 loss to Buffalo on Saturday and have now won four of their last six games.
  • The Penguins dropped their third straight contest, including an 8-3 home loss to Washington on Saturday. Before the skid, they had earned points in four consecutive games.

Pittsburgh led in the third period after Shea’s two goals, but Vesey’s wrist shot from the right circle tied it just 50 seconds after Shea’s second goal.

During one stretch, the Rangers went 15:57 without a shot against the NHL’s second-worst defensive team. Pittsburgh dominated early in the second period, recording the first 16 shots.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday, with the Rangers visiting the New York Islanders and the Penguins traveling to Philadelphia.
