Raiders safety is one of the team’s top young talents, but as he approaches free agency, his future lies elsewhere. A second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of TCU, Moehrig has established himself as one of the league’s better safeties and is expected to land a significant contract this offseason. However, that deal may not come from Las Vegas, according to ESPN’s Matt Bowen.
In a recent article, Bowen identified the Carolina Panthers as the best fit for Moehrig. Notably, Bowen’s analysis includes some free agents re-signing with their current teams, suggesting that Moehrig could still return to the Raiders. While Las Vegas will likely attempt to retain him, the Panthers may challenge them in a bidding war.
ESPN: Panthers Labeled “Best Fit” for Tre’von Moehrig
Despite finishing 5-12 last season, the Panthers have reason for optimism. Head coach Dave Canales and general manager Dan Morgan have worked to build a strong foundation around quarterback Bryce Young, who showed promise late in the season. With their offensive core in place, the team must now shift its focus to the defense.
Carolina’s defense struggled last season, ranking near the bottom in most key metrics. While edge rusher and linebacker remain top priorities, the team also needs to upgrade at safety, as no player at the position earned a top-65 PFF grade. With no young prospects poised for a breakout, Moehrig would be a valuable addition to the secondary, even if he wouldn’t solve all of their defensive issues on his own.
With both the Raiders and Panthers in contention for Moehrig, which team is more likely to secure his services?
Where Will Moehrig Sign?
While the Raiders are far from Super Bowl contention, they have the potential to make significant strides in 2025. New head coach Pete Carroll, now 73, isn’t likely to embrace a long-term rebuild and will want to field a competitive team immediately. Moehrig, entering his age-26 season, still has plenty of productive years ahead and could thrive in the right system. Carroll’s defensive philosophy prioritizes physicality, making Moehrig a strong fit, particularly given his abilities against the run and as a blitzer. While he isn’t on the level of former Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor, their playing styles are comparable.
If a bidding war ensues, the Raiders have a clear financial advantage. As of now, Las Vegas has a projected $99 million in cap space, while Carolina sits at just $24.8 million. While the Panthers could find a way to make room, the financial edge suggests that Moehrig is more likely to remain with the team that drafted him.
