Chris Klieman has finalized his Kansas State football coaching staff, with the Wildcats set to hire top star as their new tight ends coach, pending a background check. Wells brings over two decades of college coaching experience, having previously worked with tight ends at Louisiana-Monroe, Iowa State, Utah State, Texas Tech, and Tulsa.
He is a familiar name at K-State, as he is the brother of offensive coordinator Matt Wells. The two previously coached together at Utah State and Texas Tech when Matt Wells was the head coach.
“Luke brings an extensive amount of coaching experience and recruiting energy to our tight end room, which has been a key part of our recent offensive success,” Klieman said in a statement. “I have known Luke for quite a while and even considered him for previous openings. We are thrilled to have him and his family join our program.”
A 2002 graduate of Oklahoma, Wells played for the Sooners before beginning his coaching career as a student assistant. His most recent coaching role was at Tulsa.
“I am grateful for the opportunity from Coach Klieman to join this staff and be part of the winning culture at K-State,” Wells said. “I can’t wait to get to work with our talented group of tight ends.”
Klieman made several staff adjustments after former offensive coordinator Conor Riley left to become the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive line coach. Matt Wells will take over as offensive coordinator, while Brian Lepak shifts from tight ends to offensive line coach, with Drew Liddle assisting him. This left a vacancy at tight ends coach, which has now been filled by Luke Wells.
