Freshman LSU gymnast Kailin Chio was named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week after setting a personal best all-around score of 39.625 during the Tigers’ last competition at the Sprouts Collegiate Quad in Oklahoma City. Her outstanding performance comprised scores of 9.950 on vault, 9.900 on bars, 9.850 on beam, and 9.925 on the floor.
The freshman has garnered SEC Freshman accolades for two weeks in a row following her first collegiate events at LSU. Chio is presently listed as the No. 5 all-around athlete in the country, having placed in the top 20 for every event after just two weeks of competition. Kailin explained what it meant to receive this honor two weeks in a row.
She replied, “It’s just an honor. I can’t really put it into words, but the award itself is something I’ve never really gotten into. I’ve just been trying to do what’s best for my team, rather than just for myself. But I think that earning it is quite motivating for me since it shows that my hard work is paying off.”
No. 2 LSU returns to the Pete Maravich Assembly Center this week to begin league play against No. 7 Florida tonight at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
