The New York Rangers’ season has fallen short of fans’ expectations following their Conference Finals run. The team has struggled with inconsistency and is now fighting to secure a playoff spot. Several veteran players have experienced significant declines, including longtime star Chris Kreider.
Kreider’s performance has not met expectations, which could lead to a reduction—or even elimination—of his ice time. In search of a spark, the Rangers may turn to top prospect Brennan Othmann, who could be a strong addition to the lineup. However, giving Othmann more opportunities may come at Kreider’s expense.
Should the Rangers scratch Chris Kreider for Brennan Othmann?
Brennan Othmann has been dominating in the AHL with the Hartford Wolf Pack this season, recently catching fire with nine goals in his last 11 games. Through 25 games, he has totaled 19 points, making a strong case for an NHL call-up.
Meanwhile, Chris Kreider has struggled, managing just two goals and two assists in his last 10 games. Over 47 games, he has recorded only 20 points and carries a -6 rating. At 33, his production has dipped significantly, leading Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette to demote him to the third line and cut his ice time. Another demotion—or even a healthy scratch—could be on the horizon if his struggles continue.
Othmann, widely regarded as the Rangers’ top prospect, has delivered back-to-back strong seasons in the AHL. The 2021 first-round pick has played just three NHL games without registering a point, but he may be ready for another shot.
With the Rangers sitting fifth in the Metropolitan Division at 58 points, they are currently outside the playoff picture but still within striking distance of a Wild Card spot. Injecting Othmann’s energy and scoring touch into the lineup could provide the spark they need for a late-season push.
