Just In: Is Nolan Arenado Finally Staying at Cardinals for 2025 after Latest Update?

While Nolan Arenado appears eager to join the Red Sox, a trade sending the star third baseman to Boston may not be very likely.

Arenado has been considered a backup option for the Red Sox, who are reportedly among the finalists in the Alex Bregman sweepstakes. If Boston and St. Louis were to agree on a trade framework, the 10-time All-Star would reportedly waive his no-trade clause to play at Fenway Park.

However, a key sticking point could derail the deal. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Red Sox have been hesitant to move forward—not only because acquiring Arenado would likely push Rafael Devers into a near full-time designated hitter role, but also due to the ’ unwillingness to cover more of the remaining $64 million on Arenado’s contract over the next three years.

Passan noted that Boston’s interest remains uncertain unless St. Louis agrees to absorb more of the financial burden. That hesitation is understandable, given that Arenado, now 33, is coming off a down season and may not be an ideal fit for the Red Sox.

Additionally, despite months of trade speculation, the Cardinals reportedly are content keeping Arenado for 2025. So, it wouldn’t be surprising if his rumor-filled offseason ultimately ends without a move.
