After a quiet trade deadline, the New York Knicks will shift their focus to the buyout market to strengthen their championship aspirations. To remain below the second apron, they won’t be able to sign any players until after March 1, but there should still be quality options available at that time.
Knicks could pursue Josh Richardson in the buyout market
Sports Illustrated’s Jeremy Brener recommended that the New York Knicks target former Miami Heat guard Josh Richardson in the buyout market. Richardson, who was traded to the Utah Jazz in the Jimmy Butler deal and later bought out, is now a free agent.
“Richardson, a defensive-minded pro, would thrive in Tom Thibodeau’s system. And with OG Anunoby dealing with injuries, having another defender on the wing could be beneficial to the Knicks,” Brener noted.
The 31-year-old veteran, now in his 10th NBA season, recently completed his second stint with the Heat. A heel injury has limited him to just eight games this season, where he’s averaged 4.0 points per game off the bench.
Richardson could have a strong impact for the Knicks
Despite the risks of adding an aging veteran recovering from a significant injury, Josh Richardson could be the key piece the Knicks need for their second unit. His defensive prowess would bolster their bench, and he could also contribute with perimeter scoring. Richardson is a career 36% shooter from three-point range, adding valuable floor spacing to the lineup.
