Are Georgia football fans not giving the 2024 season the credit it deserves? The Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season with a 10-2 record, which was just enough to secure a spot in the SEC Championship game. There, Georgia defeated Texas for the second time that season, clinching the SEC title with backup quarterback Gunner Stockton leading the way.
That victory earned UGA the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff, though they were knocked out in the first round by Notre Dame.
With these accomplishments, you’d expect Georgia fans to be satisfied with the season, but not all of them are. Former South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier recently highlighted this point.
“Some people are out there saying Georgia didn’t have a good season, and that’s ridiculous,” Spurrier said in an interview with Dawgnation.
“Those Georgia fans need to appreciate Kirby (Smart),” Spurrier added, emphasizing that fans may be undervaluing the success of the 2024 season.
It’s possible to be happy and disappointed at the same time
While it’s true that some Georgia fans view the 2024 season as a disappointment, the majority seem to recognize the positives that came from it. It wouldn’t be fair to label the entire fanbase as unappreciative when most fans can acknowledge the team’s accomplishments.
If there’s a balanced way to assess the 2024 season, it’s by recognizing that Georgia achieved a lot of success—finishing with 10 regular season wins, securing an SEC Championship, and earning the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff—but also fell short of the ultimate goal: winning a National Championship. The Bulldogs were three wins away from reaching that expectation.
Winning double-digit games and an SEC title is impressive, and no one is denying that. However, it’s also fair to admit that while Georgia had a strong season, they didn’t meet the high standards the program has set for itself. It seems Steve Spurrier may be overlooking the fact that fans can feel both pride and disappointment at the same time.
