Calgary Flames center Nazem Kadri and defenseman Rasmus Andersson have been mentioned in NHL trade rumors this season. Kadri, 34, has faced speculation since last summer, while Andersson’s upcoming UFA eligibility in 2026 has led to questions about his future in Calgary. However, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Flames have no intention of moving Kadri, Andersson, or defenseman MacKenzie Weegar. Friedman reported last Saturday that Calgary is not entertaining trade offers for them as they push for a Western Conference wild-card spot.
Kadri and Weegar both have long-term contracts with full no-trade protection, and the team remains optimistic about extending Andersson’s contract. Instead of selling, the Flames could become buyers ahead of the March 7 NHL trade deadline. Last week, they acquired forwards Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee from the Philadelphia Flyers and may still look to add another center.
TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported Tuesday that Calgary is considering Dylan Cozens to fill their need for a right-shot center. However, the Flames face competition, as two-thirds of the league have reportedly inquired about Cozens’ availability. Calgary prefers players with term over short-term rentals, and Cozens, signed through 2029-30, fits that criteria. LeBrun noted that acquiring Cozens would require a “hockey trade,” as the Buffalo Sabres are not interested in futures like draft picks or prospects.
Meanwhile, the New York Rangers’ recent reacquisition of J.T. Miller has been a success so far, with the 31-year-old center tallying four points in his first three games back with the team. Rangers GM Chris Drury may not be done making moves before the trade deadline. The New York Post’s Larry Brooks highlighted that the Rangers have over $16 million in projected cap space, giving them flexibility for short-term acquisitions depending on the team’s performance leading up to the deadline.
On Feb. 3, Remy Mastey cited Brooks suggesting that the Rangers could target a third-line center, provided the cost is reasonable. However, Brooks believes they are unlikely to pursue rental players just to secure a wild-card spot. He also cautioned against trading promising 22-year-old winger Brennan Othmann for a short-term acquisition, calling such a move a mistake.
