According to Larry Brooks of The New York Post, the New York Rangers have not done altering their roster since adding J.T. Miller. According to PuckPedia, with $9.6 million in current cap space available ahead of the March 7 trade deadline, Brooks anticipates general manager Chris Drury to make more moves. Brooks detailed the franchise’s plans for the coming weeks in a piece published on Saturday, addressing the team’s circumstances ahead of the deadline. “The Rangers project to have $16.5M in cap space at the deadline,” Brooks said. “There is the expectation that Drury is not done making changes to the roster.”These changes may be of the short-term sort.”
The Rangers have already made substantial roster adjustments, including parting ways with former team captain Jacob Trouba and relocating former No. 2 overall pick Kaapo Kakko before the holiday break. With three games remaining before the 4 Nations Face-Off break, Drury’s next moves could be determined by how the club performs in the run-up to the trade deadline following the international event. For the time being, the Rangers have signed Miller, a former franchise player, but they should not expect to stay there.
“It is certainly an exciting day and was an exciting night to acquire J.T. Miller, certainly one of the premier impact forwards in the NHL,” Drury remarked when asked about Miller’s arrival. “He brings a unique combination of skill, size, and physicality to our team, and not just helps us here in the short term but will be a key part of our core moving forward.”
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Drury was “fully engaged” in trade conversations on many fronts before obtaining Miller, which matched Brook’s expectations. “The New York Rangers remain fully engaged in the trade market and GM Chris Drury has been looking to complete another major move to help shake up his roster and improve his team,” Pagnotta wrote on Tuesday.
The Rangers are now sixth in the Eastern Conference wild-card race with 54 points with a 25-23-4 record, six points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning for the last playoff spot.
