According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, the Dallas Stars are still changing their roster ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline on March 7. During the 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman stated, “I don’t believe the Stars have finished changing the makeup of their defense. I believe they could change it farther.” He continued, “I think it’s possible that maybe somebody else goes out and someone else comes in.”
He stated that the team expects to learn the destiny of Miro Heiskanene on Monday and whether he will return before the playoffs. “I don’t think it’s impossible that they continue to remake their blue line at least once more.”
The San Jose Sharks traded Cody Ceci and Mikael Granlund to the Stars over the weekend. Many NHL teams searching for help up front and on the blue line will follow suit with this transaction. Now it appears that the Stars will continue to modify their squad before the deadline. This technique is quite typical of the Dallas Stars.
Potential Targets:
Friedman stated that the Stars will most likely prioritize defense in the trade market. There are a couple open defenseman who might fit nicely within their system. Some alternatives that they could obtain include:
- Scott Mayfield – New York Islanders
- Rasmus Ristolainen – Philadelphia Flyers
- Brian Dumoulin – Anahiem Ducks
- Tyson Barrie – Calgary Flames
There are a few other possibilities available for trade. However, with so many teams within reach, teams will most certainly pay more to get the players they desire. The good news for the Stars is that their system can accommodate almost any style of player, and they will be successful.
They also have a history of targeting elderly veterans, which they may do again. The Dallas Stars are always able to work the system to their advantage.
The only question remaining is how much Dallas is willing to pay for another defenseman.
They currently do not have a first- or second-round pick in the upcoming 2025 NHL Draft. They do have a third-round pick, which might be used. If the Stars were to acquire a David Savard from the Montreal Canadiens, they would have to consider their draft picks for following season, among other factors.
It may be difficult to get further defensive help, but Dallas appears to want to add something else to their blue line.
