Virginia Tech’s football team is set to hold its annual Spring Game at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Lane Stadium. This year’s game carries extra intrigue due to the significant roster changes brought on by the transfer portal and players heading to the NFL Draft.
Quarterback Kyron Drones, who missed four of the last five games of the previous season, had participated in much of spring practice. However, the university announced on Saturday that he will miss the rest of spring practices and the Spring Game due to a medical procedure. Head coach Brent Pry spoke to the media after Tuesday’s workout to provide some insight into Drones’ situation.
Kyron Drones Injury Update from Brent Pry
While Pry didn’t reveal many details about Drones’ condition, he did share a general timeline for his recovery. He stated that the former Baylor quarterback could be back to full strength by mid-June, possibly even earlier.
“That’s our hope—early June, but certainly by mid-June, he should be good to go,” Pry said.

That would be promising news for the Hokies. When asked whether Drones’ current issue was related to past injuries like a stress fracture, turf toe, or an MCL sprain, Pry didn’t comment. However, he noted that the situation was serious enough to warrant getting a second opinion to ensure Drones is fully ready for the August 31 season opener against South Carolina in Atlanta.
“I said let’s reach out to some experts—figure out the best way to get him fully ready for the whole season,” Pry explained.
A healthy Drones is essential for Virginia Tech to reach its goals in 2025. While Pop Watson has shown he can run the offense, Drones remains a critical part of the team’s success, making his recovery a top priority.
