News Flash: UW Confirms The Addition Of two Highly Experienced Sec Coaches

The transfer portal may have quieted down, but the college football coaching carousel remains active—especially for Washington. Huskies head coach Jedd Fisch continued to build his staff, reportedly hiring veteran stars as an assistant quarterbacks coach and Michael Brewster as an assistant offensive line coach. Additionally, former Bellevue High standout Marcus Griffin announced via social media that he will be Washington’s new director of recruiting.

Neither Losman nor Brewster will be among UW’s 11 coaches with off-campus recruiting privileges, similar to new special teams coordinator Chris Petrilli. Meanwhile, Fisch is still searching for a linebackers coach after Robert Bala left to become Florida’s co-defensive coordinator on Feb. 5.

Losman and Brewster both bring extensive playing experience to Washington. Losman, a former Tulane quarterback, was selected 22nd overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2004 NFL Draft. He spent eight years in the NFL, though injuries and team instability affected his early career. He later transitioned into coaching, joining Clemson as a student assistant in 2017 before working his way up to senior offensive analyst. He followed Brent Venables to Oklahoma in 2022 as an assistant director of player personnel before being hired for an on-field coaching role with the Huskies. Losman will work alongside recently promoted offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jimmie Dougherty.

Brewster, a former Ohio State standout and team captain, played center for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2013 while Fisch was the offensive coordinator. After finishing his NFL career with the Saints in 2014, he moved into coaching, starting at the high school level before working at Western Michigan, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, and Tennessee State. He most recently served as the offensive line coach at Valparaiso. At Washington, Brewster will assist Michael Switzer, who was promoted after Brennan Carroll’s sudden departure on Feb. 3.

Griffin returns to the Pacific Northwest after working as the assistant director of player personnel at California. A three-time state champion at Bellevue High, he played at Arizona and Central Michigan before moving into recruiting roles. He replaces Josh Omura, who left to become Arizona State’s director of player personnel on Jan. 29. Washington may still have another opening in its recruiting department after Armond “Mondo” Hawkins Jr. joined North Carolina’s staff as cornerbacks coach. Griffin will work under Washington’s director of player personnel, Matt Doherty.

Extra Note:
Linebacker Carson Bruener was the only Husky invited to the NFL Combine, scheduled for Feb. 27–March 2 in Indianapolis. A third-team All-Big Ten selection in 2024, he led Washington with 104 tackles last season.
